Artist call-out for Heritage Sculpture Project

During the construction of Northstowe and A14 development some amazing archaeological finds were recovered that will be displayed within the Heritage Annexe for visitors to see and study. Alongside these finds there was also a considerable amount of archaeological spoil and this has inspired this project. The spoil represents pieces of less significance that, if not used in this project, would otherwise be reburied.

We are looking for an artist (or artist partnership) to work with the community, Northstowe Arts and project partners to use the spoil to create a series of sculptural mosaic artworks inspired by the history of the site and the finds that will be going on display in the annexe. The artworks will be installed in the courtyard of the Heritage Annex for the duration of the Annex – currently five years – until a permanent home is identified.

We are particularly keen to work with artists living/working in the South Cambridgeshire area, and we actively encourage applicants from under-represented backgrounds. We value the positive impact that differences have on our organisation: if you are interested in this project then we are interested in hearing from you.

Objectives:

  1. To use the archaeological spoil to inspire, design and build mosaic artworks to be sited in the Heritage annexe courtyard. (Mosaic sculptures/paving slabs or something else informed during the workshops.)

  2. To run a series of community workshops (with groups and open call events) to inform the development of the artworks/to help design/to help make the artworks (4 days).

  3. To document the project with photos and script as a record of the process that can be shared and act as project evaluation.

Budget:

  • £4,200 artist fee: 4 days of artist-led workshops, 2 days project planning/admin time, 10 days making time, 5 days installation. Total: 21 days @ £200 per day

  • £500 materials

Application process:

To apply for this commission please send us a copy of your artist CV, 6 images/videos of previous projects/your work and a letter detailing why you are interested and think you would be good for this project as well as any initial ideas of how you would approach the commission. We are not looking for detailed proposals as this will be developed in partnership at the beginning of the project.

Applications must be received by 5pm on 11th December.
