Artist call-out for Pavilions Project

As part of our community arts programme, we would like to have a mural painted on the side of one of the Pavilions. The Pavilions are 3 striking temporary wooden buildings acquired by CMAT in early 2021 from Collusion, Cambridge located at Northstowe Secondary College (NSC). The exteriors have been painted with magnolia masonry paint to waterproof the structures.

We are looking for a mural artist to spend 2 days to design and create a painted mural on boards fitted to one of the exterior walls of one pavilion. The mural will need to be weatherproof as it will be located outdoors.

The theme for the mural is a combination of the NSC values – be kind, be curious, be hardworking - and what makes Northstowe, Northstowe. There will be a social media competition for the community to put forward artworks/images/ideas of what they consider makes Northstowe distinctive and the artist will be given these at the beginning of the project as inspiration.

As part of the project, we would like the artist to work with the Arts Award and Arts Committee students so that they can see how the artist works, how they design and create the mural and what they need to consider. There will be two 1 hour sessions on Wednesdays 3:15-4:15pm for this, helping the students to learn from a professional artist about their creative process and how they approach a commissioned project such as this.

The students would enjoy being part of the design process so we envision that the first session will be before a design has been created. This will be for the artist to explain how they start a project like this and for the students to offer suggestions for elements to be included in the design.

We would like the artist to create two design proposals to choose from and in the second session students will choose the final design. The students might enjoy helping to paint the mural if this is appropriate but this can be determined at the time.

The final mural design will need to be approved by NSC before it can be painted.

We are particularly keen to work with artists living/working in the South Cambridgeshire area, and we actively encourage applicants from under-represented backgrounds. We value the positive impact that differences have on our organisation: if you are interested in this project then we are interested in hearing from you.

Interviews with a panel of students and community members will be held in the morning on 27th February.

The project will happen in March.
