Heritage Art PRoject Update

Thank you to everyone who has so far taken part in developing this new piece of public art for Northstowe!

The final sculpture is taking shape nicely: an upright structure will be metalwork, with the almost-horizontal plane being the mosaic element. There has been lots of input on the mosaic design from all sorts of people within the community at open workshops and smaller sessions specifically for residents of The Dale, Longstanton, and young people attending the Northstowe Secondary College Youth Café. Workshop participants have really engaged with how the pieces of Roman pottery should be laid out to create the mosaic, thinking about colour, texture and relative importance of different elements.

It has been fascinating to learn (thanks to input from the Cambridge Archaeological Unit) about the history of this land, getting hands on with Roman pottery found right here in Northstowe, and working out how to tie together a Roman shrine, RAF airfield, the Heritage Centre façade, archaeological trench systems and more!

Thanks to our funders, National Lottery Heritage Fund and Homes England, and our project partners, Cambridgeshire County Council, South Cambs District Council, Homes England and Longstanton & District Heritage Society.
