Light Up Longest night - 21 Dec 2023

In November 2021 and 2022, Northstowe Arts coordinated a lantern parade through Northstowe. This major event was the culmination of several weeks of activity, including workshops for families, workshops during community group sessions, sending lantern-making materials to schools (having run a session to train their teachers to deliver workshops themselves), and producing YouTube videos showing people how to make lanterns at home from recycled materials. The parade was part of Light Up Northstowe, run in partnership with Northstowe Town Council and Pathfinder Church Northstowe, and involving many of the other community groups in Northstowe.

We’re really proud that this project has involved so many people of all ages across the community, in an inclusive, creative way and entirely free of charge to participants.

Due to date clashes beyond our control we took the decision to postpone our next parade until November 2024, and instead encouraged everyone to Light Up Longest Night in 2023.

What was Light Up Longest Night?

As in previous years, we provided fully-subsidised lantern-making materials to local schools, and ran free workshops for you to make lanterns during November and December 2023 - several in partnership with other local community organisations including Northstowe Hub and Pathfinder Church Northstowe.

On 21st December we loved seeing lanterns, candles and festive lights shining out into the darkness of longest night from front gardens and windows across Northstowe and beyond!

We're grateful for funding from The National Lottery Community Fund and Homes England and the partnership of many of Northstowe's community groups and organisations for making this activity happen!

This activity was part of Northstowe Winter Festival
